Self-Hypnosis in Modern Wellness: Why It’s Gaining Popularity Today
It’s easy to get lost in fast-paced every day life. At the same time, not everyone is interested in spirituality or meditation. That’s why self-hypnosis, also called auto-hypnosis, is so crucial in modern wellness. It allows you to tackle problems like procrastination, while relying solely on science-based methods.
Why Self-Hypnosis Is Becoming a Key Tool in Modern Wellness
Modern wellness isn’t a strict, defined term. For me, it’s a collection of a physical and mental techniques, aimed to treat our body, mind and spirit. It incorporates yoga, gym or calisthenic training, meditation and self-hypnosis.
A lot of us heard about mental wellbeing, meditation and mindfulness. Meanwhile, auto-hypnosis remains a mystery to many of us.
However, it plays a crucial role in modern wellness. It is a perfect tool to tackle problems like anxieties, chronic stress, imposter syndrome and supplements traditional therapies.
What makes self-hypnosis a popular tool is that it’s quick and effective. And works wonders for people struggling with procrastination.
Which is a growing problem in today’s world. Due to the huge amount of information we receive every day (many of which are negative), it’s hard for us to concentrate. That easily leads to overthinking, doubting our actions, leaving us procrastinating.
Don’t get me wrong: other techniques used in modern wellness are also great. But in my opinion, auto-hypnosis is the best one in terms of tackling procrastination and time efficiency.
And time is the most precious “thing” we have in life.
A New Approach to Mental Well-Being
The key thing in modern wellness is approaching our body, mind and spirit as a whole. Thus, if one thing is dysfunctional, it affects our whole life.
There are many ways to approach our emotional well-being. Meditation is (not always, of course) about being in the present time. It allows us to better understand our feelings and emotions.
Yoga combines mindfulness with movement, grounding our attention to the body.
Journaling offers insight into the whole day, without the need to act right here, right now.
So, you may ask: what about auto-hypnosis?
For me, there are two key things about it.
- Self-hypnosis concentrates on working with specific problems. It’s not only about being mindful, but realizing what’s holding you back. For example: why are you paralyzed with fear when going to the public gym, but not when training at a friend’s place?
- Auto-hypnosis is about working in a hypnotic trance. It’s a state of mind, where your brain operates at theta and alpha waves. Thus, your inner world feels more real than the external one, which allows you to work with subconsciousness.
That doesn’t mean that self-hypnosis doesn’t allow you to work on your general well-being. It does, but it comes later on.
First, you learn how to perform it, then you follow with more complex problems. It’s a different approach to mental health than other techniques in modern wellness.
How Harnessing the Subconscious is Changing Wellness Trends
An interesting thing about hypnosis (with self-hypnosis included) is the highly scientific approach to that. Auto-hypnosis emphasizes that working with your subconsciousness is based on science researches.
More and more psychiatric associations also recognize that hypnotherapy is an important tool in modern wellness. For example, you can read on Royal College of Psychiatrists official website the following:
Hypnotherapy is a type of psychological therapy that uses hypnosis to help treat certain mental and physical health conditions. It can also be used to change habits.
Some therapists also use hypnosis to increase the effectiveness of other psychological treatments, or pain management (…)
You can also perform hypnosis on yourself, which is called self-hypnosis.
That being said, I do believe that other mindfulness techniques, like meditation, can be based on science. But they often emphasize the spiritual side of our lives.
Meanwhile, you can treat auto-hypnosis as a purely scientific based tool to improve your life. Actually, it is something that draws a lot of people to it (me included!).
In this way, subconscious work is changing the way we look at modern wellness. It’s not only about re-discovering ancient techniques, but relying on science. Which is a huge (in my opinion) thing in today’s world.
And brings us to another crucial point on why auto-hypnosis is gaining popularity.
From Anxiety to Confidence: A Mind-Based Approach to Wellness
In modern wellness, another key factor is approaching your confidence in order to grow. Auto-hypnosis is a great tool to boost your confidence. Whether in sports, public speakings, as an artist—hypnotic trance helps with them all.
However, the key here is how self-hypnosis allows you to shift from anxieties to confidence.
Very often we get “courage-boost” from external sources. Easy example: your boss complimented your last presentation you made for the whole team. While things like that always feel great, they are not reliable.
Don’t get me wrong—compliments are always welcomed, especially after hard work. But relying solely on them is giving away part of your freedom.
Auto-hypnosis offers a different solution: you are your own greatest hero. By working with subconscious mind, it allows you to see what are the reasons behind your anxieties. Later on—you can turn those anxieties into strengths.
It does so by acknowledging your fears, while at the same time intervening by yourself. For example: you might be scared of going to the gym, but you really want to. You put yourself in hypnotic trance and look for the reason.
Turns out, the reason was that some kids laughed at your sport’s performance when you were younger. And your PE teacher called you out as bad at your then favorite sport.
That’s where you intervene in your subconscious mind and acknowledge why you feel anxious about gym. Thanks to that, you are not only prepared to finally go there. You are fully aware where your performance is lacking and what’s the mental reason behind that.
If you are interested in how mindfulness helps athletic performance, here you can read about it. Keeping it short: your physical performance is not only about working hard, but also thinking smart.
The key to that lies in confidence.
The Pursuit of Balance
Modern wellness is about balancing your physical and mental aspects of life. Similarly, self-hypnosis emphasizes the importance of adjusting your time spent on “internal” and “external” world.
That’s because both are important to your wellbeing and happiness.
- External world – this is something many people call “normal” or “real” world. It’s your surrounding, workplace, environment, street you live on, people that are present in your life.
- Internal world – it contains your thoughts, feeling, emotions, ambitions, goals, dreams. Everything that is inside your soul and mind, that only you have access to.
The big mistake is calling the external world “real” and the internal “imaginary.” Your thoughts and feelings are real, no matter where they are. Thus, both worlds are real.
The key difference between them is how they influence you and how you influence them. You can’t shape everyone and everything around you. However, you can control how you react and perceive things.
With self-hypnosis, you can program the subconscious mind and access your internal world. For example: you love birds and to become an amateur ornithologist. Thus, you program yourself to notice more birds nearby your home.
What happens next? With time, you will indeed notice more birds in your garden. Maybe you will hear lovely bird singing during afternoon? Or a cute sparrow will land on your windowsill? Going back from workplace you’ll see a crow?
Does that mean your internal world created those birds out of thin air?
Absolutely not—at least, not in my opinion. What happens is that you shift your mind focus to notice those birds. They were there, you just couldn’t find them.
Or maybe—which happens pretty often—you started doing small things to attract those birds. First you bought some seeds, then planted delicious (from bird’s perspective) plants. After that, you decided to build a bird feeder.
Of course, all of that attracted the animals to come nearby you.
Auto-hypnosis puts heavy emphasis to balance internal and external world. I won’t tell you that you can change the whole world by sitting in hypnotic trance for hours. Challenge yourself, look if your mind programming was successful.
With time, you will get better at self-hypnosis. But even then, you still need to check in external world whether you are getting the results you desired.
That’s what balance in auto-hypnosis means.
Turning Your Biggest Enemy Into Your Greatest Ally
I’ve already mentioned it, but here I share some more information regarding auto-hypnosis and procrastination.
The truth is: the person who is often holding you back is you. Realizing that is absolutely not about blaming yourself. Quite the contrary: it’s about releasing your potential and understanding ‘the game’ of life.
Let’s look at it from distance. There is a high chance that you already have everything prepared to launch your dream business. You want to be a dance instructor and start a cozy studio in your town or district.
However, every time you feel like this is the day you take the first, crucial step, you doubt yourself. You start asking questions like:
- What if I’m not good enough to teach others?
- How do I pay taxes and rent for a studio?
- Who would want to learn from me?
- Maybe I should take some extra courses?
Of course—you should always strive to learn more if you want to develop. Nonetheless, doubting yourself and undermining your skills is holding you back. Repeating the basics of dance moves for the 100th time won’t make you a better instructor.
What will do, however, is taking first students under your wings and teaching them. If you make some mistakes—great, that means you can improve somewhere.
Self-hypnosis allows you to look at things from a distance. Moreover, it helps you to acknowledge both your strong and weak sides.
With that knowledge, you know where you should improve. At the same time, you are ready to finally take action. Because holding yourself back will always backfire on you, one way or another.
Modern wellness and auto-hypnosis are the tools to stop procrastinating. Instead of doubting yourself, believing in yourself. Even when none does.
That is the source of true strength.
